Fanny is 13 years old. She arrived here at Montebello almost five years ago when her widowed father began drinking heavily in order to avoid the responsibility of
taking care of his family. I will never forget walking into their very dirty home one spring day to find them with a wilted onion, a tiny bit of oil and about a
half-cup of rice to feed a family of eight children. Neither will I forget the sight of their father passed out across the bed while his children looked at me with
sad, hungry eyes. Life has changed much for Fanny since she came to live here at Montebello. Well fed, happy and healthy, her sweet smile and gentle ways make her a
favorite among our visitors. Though not a student by nature, Fanny is moving ahead at her own pace in her studies and doing well. She attends ballet classes twice a
week and loves to choreograph dances with her sisters.
