Seventeen year old Carmen Ushiña arrived here at Montebello with four of her brothers and sisters almost five years ago, running away from their drunken father. The
children's mother had died in childbirth several years earlier and the family had been living in a severely neglected state, watching their father spend what little he
earned doing odd jobs on alcohol, attempting to escape the burden of caring for his family alone. I remember Carmen's face the night she arrived here at Montebello,
wounded, tired and afraid, looking as though she was carrying the world on her thin young shoulders. Today, that burden lifted, Carmen is a beautiful young woman,
basking in the light of a bright hope and future.
