BLANCA ROMERO

Blanquita, ten, has been with us here at Montebello the longest of all the children. She came to us at two-and-a-half years, just beginning to walk. Blanca suffers
from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Her mother, a severe alcoholic, died of Tuberculosis when Blanca was six months old, and she was placed in an orphanage in Quito until she
came to live with us shortly after our arrival in Ecuador. Blanca has made great strides forward in the eight years she has lived with us. This year has marked a
giant step for her as she has learned to read and write in both English and Spanish and is doing math and other subjects at a first grade level. Recently Blanca read
through the entire "The Beginner's Bible", recounting the stories to us with very good understanding. Full of energy and a quick sense of humor, Blanca is determined
to break the barriers set by her condition. She is a special favorite of all of our visitors here at Montebello.
